You know what they say ... "spice a dish with love and it pleases every palette."
RV spices are essential whether you love to cook - or whether you must cook for sustenance (and the only reason you have an RV kitchen is because it came with the rig)!
Not only do spices provide natural flavoring to your meal, but certain ones also provide health benefits such as reducing inflammation and adding antioxidants.
But it's impractical (and frustrating) to try to store a plethora of spices and seasonings for RV cooking. Pennywise to the rescue! We'll help you save money and travel lightly, addressing the problem of paring down prized possessions like basic spices.
You'll be on your way to creating cheerful chow with this list of savory, salty, and sweet RV spices.
Best Spices for an RV
Of course! Did you know that before modern industrialization, salt was extremely difficult to harvest and therefore really expensive? And that cultures of old almost exclusively used salt for food preservation? Whole people groups might literally have starved without salt-cured foods.
Salt was indeed so valuable that people were even sometimes paid in salt! Therefore, when you said someone was "worth their weight in salt," you were giving them high praise, effectively saying they were a valuable commodity to a business or group.
Even though modern technology has made salt readily available and cheap in price, let us not forget how this amazing mineral adds essential life-giving properties to our bodies and flavor to our foods!
Plato said, "Pepper is small in quantity and great in virtue." I tend to agree!
It's a staple in your RV spices collection. Pepper adds a kick to everything from meats, vegetables and pasta to fruit, eggs, salad dressings and dips. But it's also an antioxidant that can promote digestion, prevent diarrhea, and boost nutrient absorption.
However, if your digestive system can't handle the addition of pepper, don't worry. I've got some other herbs and spices that will flavor your foods with zest without troubling your tummy.
Garlic is said to be a natural remedy and anti-bacterial agent, but even more importantly, it may also stave off the vampires lurking about your campsite!
Whether you pack this as a fresh bulb or a ground powder, make sure it is included in your repertoire of flavors!
4. Onion Powder
Whether you're making a stew, soup, roasted veggies, or fish, a dash of onion powder can be all the flavor you need.
For foods like oatmeal, sweet rolls, granola, sweet potatoes, apples, and even Middle Eastern chicken dishes. Mmm ...
For Italian dishes, by all means. If you are making a spaghetti sauce or soup and you don't have an Italian blend, combine oregano and some basil, and you've got a simple herb solution.
7. Chili Powder
Chili powder mixed with cumin or a chili blend can be the base for an amazing pot of chili to share with your RV camping neighbors or visiting family and friends.
For Mexican or Indian food. Perfect when you're making fajitas, Spanish rice, or stir-fried eggplant. If you don't have an RV spices blend for these types of recipes, cumin is your go-to. Use it as a rub for pork as well.
Adds a sweetness to steamed and grilled veggies. Also excellent for Italian sauces and dishes.
10. Cayenne or Red Pepper Flakes
If your people are like mine, this is an essential. The heat of the peppers gives that extra "kick" to any dish.
RV Spices as Seasoning Blends
Spice blends and all-purpose seasonings save you the trouble of storing a large number of individual spices in your RV kitchen.
My favorite spice blends are from Penzey's because they're fresh and most have low or no-salt options. This is especially important if you're trying to control sodium intake or eliminate MSG from your diet.
While there are 70 Penzey's retail outlets nationwide, they are also online and ship everywhere. Penzey's has trial-size .8 oz baggies for many of their spices, along with online recipes, so you can try some blends before investing in larger sizes. These trial bags are also the perfect size for your RV kitchen.
If you don't have time to wait, order them through Amazon and have them shipped to your home or RV campground in two business days. If you have Prime, it's free shipping!
